The Birdhaven Team Offer
Join a salon where you can develop your craft, understand the business, influence how it works and share in its success.
Status: This is the company and employee model Birdhaven is building. Your signed employment offer and the approved shared-upside rules contain the final financial terms.
A studio built around people
Birdhaven is a neighbourhood studio, a team and a place to learn. We care about excellent work, honest advice, healthy client relationships and helping people grow.
Under new ownership, Birdhaven has kept its roots while bringing fresh energy, professional systems and continuous education into the studio. Our next step is to build the company in the same way: around trusted people who understand the business, have room to use judgement and share in the value they help create.
The company we are building
We are building a repeatable salon system that can grow across locations while keeping local responsibility, human judgement and a clear view of how the business works.
The idea is simple:
Learn how the business works. Keep score together. Share in a verified outcome.
Read How We Work at Birdhaven for what this means in a working week, what management and stylists each own, and which terms belong in your written agreement.
Three promises
Support to do excellent work
Agreed pay, learning, tools, clear standards and management support. We explain the purpose behind our processes and help you build both your craft and your understanding of the business.
Trust and a voice
You should understand decisions, see relevant numbers, suggest improvements and use your judgement close to the client and the work. Rules remain few and explicit, with clear boundaries for law, safety, consent, fairness and money. Private client and employee information stays protected.
A share in success
When the salon creates verified value beyond its operating and protection needs, eligible team members share the remainder through rules known in advance.
How we plan to work each week
Our proposed routine is a short team conversation:
- See: review progress toward the salon target, relevant costs and problems needing attention.
- Discuss: explain what helped and what made the work harder.
- Act: choose one improvement and someone to take responsibility for it.
- Review: at the next meeting, check whether it worked.
Managers explain the numbers and help the team act on them. Weekly figures are provisional; shared upside is confirmed after the monthly accounts are checked.
Secure base. Shared success.
You receive your ordinary contractual pay regardless of whether a team pool exists. Employees are not required to contribute capital or cover business losses. Shared upside is an additional opportunity when the salon succeeds.
Money actually collected − the full cost of running the salon − Birdhaven's pre-agreed protected amount = the team shared-upside pool
The protected amount supports Birdhaven's systems and the salon's financial reserves. Its components and adjustment formula must be approved and disclosed before the scheme starts.
Illustration only: R55,000 left after operating costs, less a R20,000 protected amount, leaves a R35,000 team pool. R20,000 is a proposed starting point; its scope and adjustment formula are still being decided.
The team pool has no fixed cash ceiling, but depends on available surplus. Birdhaven takes no further percentage from that pool. Each eligible person receives their calculated share; if no surplus is available, the pool is zero.
How we keep it fair
- Visible business charges: management pay, system charges and reserve contributions are explained. Adjustments follow agreed rules for future periods.
- The whole team counts: the proposed allocation combines participation and contribution. Supporting colleagues and shared responsibilities count alongside client service under the published criteria. The exact weights remain to be approved.
- A calculation you can check: you receive a statement and can query the inputs or challenge factual errors before finalisation. Favouritism and changes to the rules after the period do not decide your payout.
Your part
You promise to care for clients, contribute to the whole salon, use the common systems, keep information accurate, raise problems early and help the team learn.
What this is — and is not
This is employment with professional support, meaningful responsibility and an additional opportunity to share in salon success.
It is not guaranteed bonus pay, individual commission, equity, a partnership, a vote on every ownership decision, or a requirement to carry business losses.
Is Birdhaven right for you?
You will enjoy working here if you value learning, teamwork, honest conversations and responsibility.
Before you join
Ask Birdhaven management to walk you through the role and a sample shared-upside calculation. Before deciding, you should receive your role, ordinary pay, working arrangements, available support and applicable sharing rules in writing.
Those terms must include eligibility, the allocation method, the effective model version, and the treatment of leave, starters, leavers, payroll and tax. The proposed model on this page becomes part of your offer only when its terms are approved and included in writing.
